E-Readers

Just finished L.A. Dead the sixth book in the Stone Barrington by Stuart Woods.  I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read number 7.  I Think I will start it later this afternoon.  I was always a stickler for reading an actual book, I loved the smell of a new book and the feel of it in my hands, the sound of the pages turning.   I didn't understand why people would even want an e-reader, I thought they were crazy and it took the fun out of going to the library or a bookstore to find a good book.  I then was transferred out of the school library I worked for into giving breaks for people.  I am only in a room for 15 minute breaks and 30 min lunches, and I really don't have a place to put my stuff because I am in so many different places.  I started carrying a book bag with me, to put my coat and other things I need throughout the day.  In it of course was the book I was reading, after a while I got sick of carrying books and the bag got kind of heavy after a while and started hurting my shoulder.  This is when I decided I would like an e-reader.  I decided on a Nook Color from Barnes and Noble because at the time it was the only e-reader that was colored and back-lit.  I have to read before I go to bed and always had the light on low which disturbed my husbands sleep although he would never admit to it.  I thought an e-reader would be a good solution to the problem.  I didn't have to carry around the latest hardcover book that was too heavy for my bag and I didn't have to worry about having to run out of things to read.  My Nook can hold several books and it only weighs as much as a small book.  I have to say that I LOVE my Nook.  I don't miss not reading a regular book and I don't ever think I could go back to one.  One of my favorite features is that if you don't know the meaning of a word, you just hold your finger on it and you can get a definition.  When I use to read regular books I would mostly just ignore the word and hoped I could pretty much figure it out by context of the reading.  If you are having any trouble on deciding whether to buy an e-reader, buy one it is worth it.  There are a lot of free books you can get for them.  Facebook also has many groups that will tell you what free books are available that day.  Many libraries have a checkout system that you can check out e-books for free as long as you have a card to that library.  I also joined the Free Library of Philadelphia for $15 dollars a year so I could check out books through them because I did not have any libraries in my area that participate in such a program at the time I bought my Nook.  The bad side is there were a lot of holds on copies and I had to wait for the books I wanted which I didn't really like but it was a lot cheaper than buying books all the time.  If your local library does not offer a similar service tell them to look into Overdrive, this is the program that all the libraries I have checked out e-books at have used.

Until  Next Time,
The Naughty Librarian

  1. Do you think that e-readers are actually a good alternative to books? And if so what e-reader would you reccomend to a fellow reader?

    1. Yes I truly believe they are a great alternative. I personally own a Nook Color from Barnes and Noble and I love it. I have played a little bit with the Kindle Fire and it seems to be a nice reader as well. I think the Nook Color/Tablet are very similar to the Kindle Fire. They just have a different way to navigate around in them. I know both Amazon and Barnes and Noble have a lot of free books for download if you search for them. Since I own the Nook Color I would have to recommend the Nook, but I think either of the two would be fine. With the Nook you can go into any Barnes and Noble store get on their internet and preview any book for up to an hour. I really liked the fact that if you enjoy taking a book with you wherever you go. You don't have to haul around several books, like I use to do because I didn't want to run out of books or start one I didn't like then not have a backup. With an e-reader you can carry many books with you all the time.
